A third school resource officer will be added in Valparaiso schools beginning July 1.

Valparaiso Police Chief Jeff Balon made the announcement at this week's City Council meeting when asking for an appropriation of money to fund the position. Balon said the $40,000 is coming from Valparaiso Community Schools as a reimbursement for the additional officer. Another $5,000 is being appropriated to cover uniform and other costs.

The appropriation is scheduled for adoption at the council's June 25 meeting.

Balon said this will enable the department and schools to place school resource officers full-time at the high school and each of the two middle schools.

In addition to the SRO program, Balon said they also have an adopt-a-school program in the district's elementary schools which allows officers to stop by schools and interact with students.
