HOBART — One person is dead after police and SWAT officers swarmed a Hobart neighborhood Sunday, police said.
Officers were dispatched around 4:20 p.m. to the 1700 block of Old Ridge Road for reports of shots fired.
While on scene, officers heard a shot fired from inside the residence and learned from people who exited the home that a man was inside with a handgun, according to a statement from the Hobart Police Department.

Police officers from Merrillville, New Chicago, St. John, Crown Point and Dyer, plus personnel from Hobart Fire and Lake County Sheriff's departments, assisted.
Police called in Northwest Regional SWAT officers, who discovered the man dead in the residence around 7:15 p.m., according to Hobart police.
Officers did not fire any shots, and no one was injured in the incident, Detective Lt. Nicholas T. Wardrip said via email.

Unrelated to the man's death, one person was taken into custody. Witnesses said he was arrested after leaving his home and telling police to stay off his property during the stand-off.
Hobart police have not released the name of the man who died and said they are still investigating.
