SCHERERVILLE — Police are investigating after home surveillance footage captured two people trying to light something on someone's front porch on fire just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

"Lighting something on fire on someone’s front porch is a bad idea. Lighting something on fire on someone’s front porch directly in front of a Ring doorbell, is an even worse idea," Schererville police said in a news release on Sunday.

Ring-branded doorbell systems include video surveillance.

Detectives are asking anyone who lives on Jeffrey Street between 74th Place and Pershing Road with a Ring-branded doorbell or home security system to review their footage just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

"We believe the offenders may live in that area," police said.

Still images shared by police appear to show two individuals walking up to the homeowner's porch steps, placing an item at the edge, lighting it on fire and then stomping on the remnants. The news release did not disclose what the individuals set on fire.

"Fortunately, this fire was extinguished before causing any serious damage," police said.

Anyone with information on identity or have any additional video footage, please contact Officer Justin Juarez at jjuarez@schererville.org.
