'Police are surrounding his crib.' Man repeatedly shot at neighbor outside Hammond apartment complex, police say.

CROWN POINT — A Hammond man was sitting in his vehicle last month when a neighbor began shooting at his car, shattering his rear window and threatening his life, according to recently filed court documents.

Anthony J. Parra, 26, was charged Tuesday in Lake Criminal Court with attempted murder and two felony counts of attempted battery on allegations he tried shooting the neighbor April 17 at Southmoor Apartments, 5946 Hohman Ave.

The neighbor said he was in his vehicle in the parking lot of the apartment complex at 7:40 p.m. when he heard two loud bangs, documents state.

He said he saw a man pointing a gun at him, so he immediately drove away. He heard two more gunshots and a bullet shattered his rear window before he was able to drive to a safe location and call police.

Police found four spent .40 caliber shell casings near where the suspect stood, records state. A witness to the shooting said the suspect appeared intoxicated and entered a nearby apartment building.

Detectives learned Parra's girlfriend sent a text message to Parra's mother minutes after the shooting.

“Anthony shot some car or something and he said the police are surrounding his crib,” she allegedly texted, documents state. “He just called me.”

The alleged victim identified Parra as the shooter in a photo array.

Parra is already in custody in Lake County on charges of attempted robbery, intimidation and attempted receiving of stolen property, documents state.

He is not afforded bond on the new charges.
