CROWN POINT — A man charged with shooting a boy and his father at a Hobart Walmart will need to post a $200,000 surety bond to be released from Lake County Jail, a magistrate judge ordered Wednesday.

Alex C. Hughes, 26, of Gary, appeared in custody Wednesday morning before Judge Kathleen Sullivan, according to court records.

Sullivan entered a not guilty plea on Hughes' behalf to charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery and criminal gang activity. She also scheduled a $200,000 surety bond, records state. Hughes would need to post 10 percent in cash, or $20,000, to be released from Lake County Jail while awaiting trial.

Defense attorney Russell W. Brown Jr. notified the court Thursday he was representing Hughes. He requested a bond reduction hearing, which the magistrate judge scheduled for Friday.

Hughes was arrested Tuesday by the Gary Police Department's SWAT team on charges stemming from the shooting and wounding of a 25-year-old man and his 9-year-old son the night of Sept. 30 outside the Walmart off U.S. 30 in Hobart.

Hughes and the boy's father allegedly belonged to rival gangs in Gary's Glen Park area, and the Sept. 30 shooting was part of a cycle of retaliatory violence between the two gangs dating back to 2011.

Brown said Wednesday he had been in contact with attorneys to obtain surveillance footage from the Walmart. He said he was also attempting to obtain surveillance footage from surrounding businesses.

“At this time, the investigation is ongoing, but we believe once surveillance video is obtained and reviewed, it is going to paint a different picture than was originally described by the complaining witnesses in the case,” Brown said.
