GARY — Police are investigating after a body was found Thursday afternoon in a marsh area near West 35th Avenue and Chase Street, authorities said.

Gary police responded at 3:46 p.m. to the area for what was believed to be a body in the marsh area west of Chase Street, according to a Gary Police Department news release. 

The body was recovered with the assistance of the Gary Fire Department. The man was declared dead on scene by the Lake County coroner's office.

The investigation is in the preliminary stages and any updates will be released as they become available, according to Gary police Lt. Dawn Westerfield.
