WINFIELD — Church volunteers found a body in a pond at Holy Spirit Catholic Church while changing a marquee sign in front of the building.

Officials could not confirm whether the man was missing 64-year-old Winfield resident Terry Fodemski; however, Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey said she will be collecting and reviewing Fodemski's dental records this week to determine if it is Fodemski.

Fodemski was last seen on Nov. 9 and search efforts since then have come up empty-handed. Police said he was believed to be traveling on foot and had bipolar disorder.

Volunteers found the dead man in the pond in the front of the church at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez said.

The man was pronounced dead by coroners at 1:31 p.m. Wednesday at the church at 7667 E. 109th Ave., according to a news release from Frey.

Coroners did not release the name or age of the man. The cause of death is pending.

Winfield Town Marshal Dan Ball said his department, with the assistance of the Lake County Sheriff's Department, is heading the death investigation. He said no further details will be released at this time, pending an autopsy on the man scheduled for Thursday.

The Crown Point Dive Team and Indiana Department of Natural Resources were involved in the recovery of the body, alongside Lake County CSI, Lake County Coroner's Office, Winfield Police Department, Crown Point Fire Department, Lakes of the Four Seasons Fire Department and the Lake County Sheriff's Department.
