GARY — Two people were killed, five were wounded and one was injured by flying debris in seven separate shootings since Friday night, police said.

The violence brings the number of homicides so far this year to 34, compared with 31 at the same time last year, Cmdr. Jack Hamady said. Fewer people have been wounded by gunfire this year than at the same time in 2018, he said.

A 29-year-old woman and her 3-year-old son suffered graze wounds when a man got out of a passing car and opened fire on them about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday as they sat in her vehicle in the 1900 block of Williams Street, Hamady said.

The woman grabbed her son and ran, eventually seeking help at a home in the neighborhood. She and her son were taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said.

Her car sustained damage from the gunfire. Detective Sgt. William Fazekas is investigating.

Police took an 18-year-old Gary man into custody Monday night, hours after a 19-year-old Merrillville woman was shot in an apparent domestic dispute in the 100 block of West 49th Avenue, Hamady said.

The man fled the area after the shooting about 9:15 p.m. Police developed information about his identity and the car he was driving and surrounded a home in the 3900 block of Tennessee Street, Hamady said.

The man exited the house and was taken into custody about 11:20 p.m. Police recovered a stolen handgun, $2,000 in counterfeit money and Ecstasy from inside the home, Hamady said.

A 28-year-old Gary man was shot in the side about 1:20 a.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of Williams Street, police said.

Detective Sgt. Gregory Wolf is investigating.

Jeriel Odie, 35, of Merrillville, was shot in the chest and died at the scene of a shooting about 11:10 p.m. Sunday in the 600 block of Adams Street, officials said.

Police found Odie lying motionless in the front lawn after responding to the home for a report of a gunshot victim, Hamady said.

The man got a ride to a local hospital for treatment. Wolf is investigating.

Rashad Cunningham, 25, of Gary, was killed in a police-involved shooting early Saturday in the area of 23rd Avenue and Kentucky Street.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation at the request of Gary police. Details about what led to the shooting have not yet been released. Hamady declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation by sheriff’s police.

About 8:30 p.m. Friday, a 21-year-old East Chicago woman’s hand was injured by flying debris during a shooting in the 1300 block of Van Buren Street.
