EAST CHICAGO — A 20-year-old Hammond man was identified Friday as the person found dead Thursday in East Chicago's Harbor section.

Isaiah Pina, of Hammond's Hessville neighborhood, died from gunshot wounds in the 4000 block of Pulaski Street in East Chicago, Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey said in a news release.

Police said Pina had suffered gunshot wounds to his body.

The death was ruled a homicide, the fifth so far this year in East Chicago, records show.

Police discovered Pina's body about 7:50 a.m. Thursday, after someone flagged down an officer.

Neighbors, who lined the block Thursday morning, said they called police hearing gunshots between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police confirmed they responded to the area overnight because the city's ShotSpotter technology alerted them to gunshots, but officers didn't find anything at that time.

Pina's body was found behind homes along Pulaski and Alder streets, about one block north of the East Chicago Police Department.
