EAST CHICAGO — Police say they are still investigating a Feb. 19 shooting but made an arrest in a March 20 shooting stemming from an argument between a young boyfriend and girlfriend.

In the first shooting, a man told police he was walking to a store late Feb. 19 in the 4500 block of Indianapolis Boulevard when "four juveniles attacked him and shot him twice in the head."

East Chicago Lt. Marguerite Wilder said anyone with information should contact Detective Isaac Washington at 219-391-8318.

On March 20, a juvenile was arrested on battery charges after police were dispatched to an apartment in the 4500 block of Magoun Avenue for a report of a female juvenile shot in the shoulder area.

He told police he confronted his girlfriend about a text on her cellphone, but claimed his gun went off accidentally, the report states. After he ran from the apartment, he said he disposed of the gun — which he bought from a friend for $300 — in the canal near the East Chicago Water Department, police said.

He was arrested for battery and taken to the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center. The juvenile accused in the shooting was not identified due to his age.
