CROWN POINT — A woman is charged with slapping a toddler last month while she was an employee at a day care in Gary.

Alexis L. McFerson, 34, was charged in Lake Criminal Court with battery, a level 6 felony, on allegations she struck a 2-year-old boy Oct. 8 at Pathways day care, 1061 Harrison Blvd. in Gary, according to court records.

The boy's mother told Gary police she was dropping her child off with the 34-year-old woman at the home day care. She said the boy threw a toy at McFerson's head, and the employee responded by smacking her child in the face, records state

The mother told police the blow was so forceful it left a hand print. The child suffered bruising and an eye hemorrhage, records state.

Georgie Haskins, owner of Pathways, said Monday McFerson was fired immediately after the incident. She said McFerson, who she described as a good employee before the incident, told her, “It was like a reflex.”

McFerson remained wanted on a warrant Monday morning, records state. Her surety bond is $20,000.
