CROWN POINT — A man was attempting to quash a feud between families when he was repeatedly shot last week by four men in Hammond, according to court records.

The alleged shooters — three cousins and their friend — were charged Tuesday in Lake Criminal Court with two counts of attempted murder, two counts felony battery and felony attempted battery.

The three cousins are identified in court records as Jovan E. Covington, Saivion T. Covington and Shaquille R. Covington. All three cousins are 23 years old and from Hammond.

The friend is Alan L. Ross, 21, of Hammond.

Jovan Covington was arrested Monday. The other men remained wanted Tuesday, authorities said.

Hammond police Detective Sgt. John Suarez thanked the cooperating witnesses who helped solve the case.

Police were dispatched at approximately 2:36 p.m. March 27 to the 1000 block of Drackert Street after receiving reports a 54-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds, court records state.

The man was transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary. He was treated for gunshot wounds to the left thigh, right forearm, left wrist and left hand.

The man told police he was at his home with his son when they were confronted on their porch by the Covingtons. He said the men were there because of an earlier altercation between his son and the mother of his son's three children, a relative of the Covingtons.

The man said he knew the cousins' father and hoped to stop the feud. He said Ross began shooting at him from across the street, which prompted the cousins to begin shooting.

The man's brother told police he followed the shooters' vehicle after it fled the scene. He provided police a license plate number, which indicated the vehicle was registered to the mother of Saivion Covington's child.

She told police she let Saivion Covington use the vehicle that day, records state.

Saivion Covington was transported later that afternoon to Community Hospital in Munster. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the groin.

He admitted he was at the victim's home but claimed he ran when the shooting started.

Saivion Covington was on probation for a 2014 robbery conviction, records state.

Ross was charged in July 2014 with attempted murder and robbery on allegations he shot a mother and her two teenage daughters during a cell phone robbery in Hammond.

The case was filed dismissed in September 2014, records state, but charges were refiled in federal court.

It's not clear from court records how the federal case was resolved.

Jovan Covington and Shaquille Covington are afforded a $100,000 surety bond on the charges.

Saivion Covington and Ross are not afforded bond, records state.
