CROWN POINT — A man stabbed a woman in the back of the neck with a screwdriver while their child was in an apartment Monday in Gary's Miller section, court records allege.
Ronald C. Morris, 37, of Gary, suffered a cut to his arm after the woman used a knife to prevent him from entering a bedroom where she had barricaded herself and their 4-year-old son, Lake Criminal Court records say.
When a detective arrived at the apartment in the 5800 block of Forest Court, medics were wheeling Morris out. He was yelling, "She should be arrested and charged with attempted murder," according to a probable cause affidavit.
The woman told police Morris had confronted her with the screwdriver and stabbed her as she walked away from him. She said Morris was drunk, records say.
At the hospital, Morris smelled of alcohol and claimed the woman had become angry and suddenly started stabbing him.
The detective asked why the first officers on scene had to order Morris to drop the screwdriver. Morris replied, "I had it in my pocket," records state.
Morris was charged Tuesday with three counts of domestic battery.
