WHITING — A Hammond man was arrested Friday on misdemeanor charges alleging he damaged cameras at Whihala Beach last month, police said.

David R. Osterkamp, 24, told Whiting investigators he rode his bicycle to the lakefront and became upset when he found it had been stolen, according to a police report.

Osterkamp said he was drunk and found a few cameras already had been damaged, so he picked up a stick and damaged two or three more, the report says. He could not recall exactly how many cameras he damaged.

Police identified Osterkamp after releasing a surveillance photo and receiving a tip through the Fraternal Order of Police lodge's Facebook page.

Osterkamp was expected to face a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief in Whiting City Court, Police Chief Steve Miller said.

The damage to the cameras was estimated to be between $3,000 and $6,000. Repairs were scheduled for Saturday, Miller said.
