MUNSTER — A Lansing man was charged Thursday with drunken driving and attempted armed robbery of two teens at Centennial Park, police said.

Daniel J. Altier Jr., 44, is accused of approaching the teens about 6 p.m. Tuesday, displaying a gun and demanding their wallets and cellphones, Lt. Ed Strbjak said.

The kids set off their car's panic alarm, and Altier fled in a black Toyota truck with South Carolina license plates.

Munster police stopped the truck in the area of Ridge Road and Manor Avenue and took Altier into custody, Strbjak said. A 9mm handgun was recovered from the vehicle, he said.

Altier was charged with two felony counts of attempted armed robbery and misdemeanor counts of operating while intoxicated and carrying a pistol without a permit, police said.
