CROWN POINT — An 18-year-old man accused of assisting his 16-year-old girlfriend in her mother's murder was released from jail Thursday on court-ordered electronic monitoring.

Virgil King was released by order of Judge Pro Tem Jerome Ezell. Ezell ordered King to be placed on electronic monitoring and warned him to follow his attorney's instructions “to the letter.”

Ezell ordered King's release after a discussion at the bench. The state did not object to King's release.

The defendant is charged with assisting a criminal and auto theft, both felonies, on allegations he helped conceal or destroy evidence related to Jamie M. Garnett's murder Feb. 13, 2017, at her residence in the 4400 block of West 23rd Place in Gary.

Chastinea Reeves, King's 16-year-old girlfriend, is charged with murder in her mother's stabbing death.

Reeves allegedly crawled into bed with the 34-year-old woman, stabbed her to death, and then took her little sister to a relative's house before fleeing, according to recently filed court documents.

Police launched an intensive search for Reeves, who was allegedly communicating with King through a friend's social media account.

Reeves was taken into custody Feb. 14, 2017, and allegedly admitted she stabbed her mother, documents state. She said King helped hide her mother's vehicle after the murder.

King is next scheduled to appear in court April 12.
