LAPORTE — An investigation that began in Canada landed in LaPorte with federal charges and seizure of more than 1,000 sexually explicit images of children, federal court records show.

Christopher Bangs, 24, of the 2100 block of Monroe Street, is charged in U.S. District Court in South Bend with transportation, receipt and possession of child pornography.

A total of 50 pornographic videos of youngsters were also recovered from Bangs' iPad, according to court records.

According to court documents, the investigation began after authorities in Saskatchewan arrested an individual in March 2016 for sharing child pornography via a mobile chat application.

The investigation turned up more than 70 users of the same app who shared or posted images of child pornography directly with the man or group he belonged to, court records state.

Bangs was identified by the U.S Department of Homeland Security from his IP address and username “infinity-extreme2” as one of the group members sharing the images, according to court documents.

During an August search of Bangs' home, a forensic examiner downloaded images from his iPad starting in May 2014, the records state.

Court documents state Bangs admitted to the allegations when interviewed by federal agents.
