A Gary man allegedly had erectile dysfunction pills, a mason jar containing marijuana and a loaded gun while fleeing from a Lake County Sheriff’s traffic stop over the weekend, police records show.

Dewan Burnett, 47, was being held Tuesday at the Lake County jail on probable cause for resisting arrest with a vehicle, possessing a handgun without a license, stolen property possession, marijuana possession and reckless driving, Lake County police records state.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Coty Mansfield pulled over Burnett's vehicle about 2:40 a.m. Sunday for failing to use a turn signal when exiting a gas station near the intersection of 24th Avenue and Broadway in Gary's Midtown section.

After stopping Burnett’s minivan on 21st Avenue just west of Broadway, Mansfield reported a second car — a white passenger vehicle — pulled in behind his patrol car.

Burnett then exited his minivan, police records state.

Burnett was ordered back into his car as officers spoke with the occupants of the white car, police said.

Once a second officer arrived on scene, Burnett allegedly slammed his driver’s side door shut and fled westbound, disregarding several stop signs and speeding.

His car sped the wrong way through an intersection near West 19th Place when Burnett lost control of the vehicle, jumped out and ran from the scene.

Mansfield and a second officer observed Burnett leap a chain link fence and land into a yard in the 500 block of West 19th Place, where the officers scrambled to take him into custody, court records show.

When one officer grabbed Burnett by the shoulders, he observed Burnett “suddenly draw a black handgun from near his waist with his right hand," police records allege.

The report states Officer Mansfield yelled “Gun!”

Burnett allegedly then tossed the gun, which struck a paved area, causing “small sparks as it hit the ground," police said.

Officers then tussled with Burnett, striking him in the hand and knee and then using a stun gun to subdue the suspect, police said.

Once Burnett was handcuffed, police patted him down, allegedly finding a mason jar filled with 23.5 grams of suspected marijuana, sexual enhancement drugs known as “SWAG” pills and a gun holster.

The gun Burnett tossed was loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition and reported stolen out of Park Forest, Illinois in 2013, police said.

Burnett, who suffered a small cut on his left eyebrow and complained of left wrist pain, was medically cleared for his Lake County Jail booking.

Charges are pending.
