CROWN POINT — A man charged in a four-car crash that killed a Winfield man last month wants his bond reduced.
An attorney for Richard A. Westerhoff, 29, of Lake Station, requested a bond reduction hearing during Westerhoff's formal appearance Friday before Magistrate Kathleen Sullivan.
Sullivan set a bond reduction hearing for 8 a.m. Feb. 1 in Lake Criminal Courtroom 3. She also affirmed an omnibus hearing for 8:30 a.m. March 15.
Westerhoff is accused of driving drunk and with cocaine and marijuana in his system Dec. 10 when he caused a four-car crash that killed 20-year-old Julian Tinoco, of Winfield, and injured himself and two other people.
He has pleaded not guilty to 15 counts filed Dec. 18 in connection with the crash in Winfield.
Police said Westerhoff was driving west on 109th Avenue when he crossed the center line at Deer Creek Drive and collided with three other vehicles. He hit a 2006 Honda, a 2008 Ford Escape and a 2014 Chevrolet Impala driven by Tinoco.
In addition to alcohol and drugs, speed was determined to be a factor in the crash, police said.
