CROWN POINT — A 38-year-old man is accused of molesting his girlfriend's daughter on several occasions in East Chicago.

The girl's mother allegedly knew about the abuse, but did not report it to police, according to court documents filed Thursday.

Robert L. Alejandro was charged Thursday in Lake Criminal Court with three counts of child molesting and two counts of criminal confinement.

The girl's godfather contacted East Chicago police July 24 to report his 13-year-old goddaughter's sexual abuse, court records state. The godfather said he learned about the abuse from the girl's mother.

The girl told authorities Alejandro had raped and molested her repeatedly since she was about 8 years old, records state. The girl said her mother had caught Alejandro raping her in 2012, but she did not report it to police.

The girl said the most recent abuse happened two or three weeks before July 24. In that instance, Alejandro forced her to perform oral sex on him in his minivan while they were driving to a liquor store, records state.

She said she finally told her mother she was “tired of Alejandro having sex with her,” at which point her mother told her godfather about the abuse. He then called police, records state.

The mother allegedly admitted in an interview with police she knew Alejandro was performing sexual acts on her daughter. She said she did not contact police because she was scared, records state.

Alejandro denied having sexual contact with the girl, records state.

Alejandro was arrested Tuesday. He is not afforded bond, records state.

No charges were filed against the mother Friday.
