CROWN POINT — A 23-year-old man is charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl earlier this year at a Hobart apartment.

Montana D. Williams was charged Wednesday in Lake Criminal Court with rape, criminal confinement and sexual battery.

Williams was taken into custody Thursday. His surety bond is $30,000.

Hobart police learned Feb. 8 a 16-year-old girl reported to her therapist she was sexually battered by an unknown man, court records state.

She told detectives she met “Tay” on Snapchat, a photo messaging phone application. She said Tay claimed to be 18 and asked her directly if she wanted to have sex. She declined, but agreed to meet him Jan. 24 to get food, records state.

The girl said the man drove her back to his apartment near Southlake Mall. He asked her to “cuddle,” despite knowing she was 16 years old, records state. The man allegedly wrapped his legs around the girl after she refused his advances and groped her buttocks and groin, records state.

The girl said the man only agreed to drive her home after her friend called, records state.

Detectives determined Tay lived at an apartment complex in the 2000 block of East 84th Street. They asked an employee at the complex to call two phone numbers they had for Tay and tell him he had a package in the main office.

Williams answered the phone at one of the numbers, records state. Police learned Williams also owned the same make and model vehicle the girl said “Tay” used to drive her to his apartment.

The girl was shown a photo array and identified Williams as the person who assaulted her, records state.
