Man held without bond after alleged escape from monitoring in home invasion, gang rape case

CROWN POINT — An East Chicago man will be held without bail until at least Friday on charges alleging he escaped from home monitoring while free on bond in a Hammond home invasion and rape case.

Elias Costello, 19, appeared in custody Tuesday with his defense attorney John Cantrell for a hearing before Lake Criminal Court Judge Samuel Cappas.

Costello was arrested Feb. 7, about three weeks after the ankle monitor he was issued as part of his pretrial release stopped working. He was charged Jan. 23 with felony escape and misdemeanor theft of the monitor.

Costello appeared Feb. 8 before Magistrate Kathleen Sullivan, who set a $50,000 bond in the escape case.

Cappas ordered Costello be held without bond Monday, after the Lake County prosecutor's office filed a motion to reconsider.

Costello is accused of conspiring with girlfriend Alexis M. Lietz and two accomplices, Nathaniel J. Asbury, 21, and Isiah Barboza, 16, to break into Lietz's family's home July 16. According to court records, Asbury and Barboza raped Lietz's relative at gunpoint while Costello held the woman down.

Costello and Michael A. Rogers are charged in a different burglary July 8 at the home of a different girlfriend of Costello.

Costello formally pleaded not guilty to the escape charges during Tuesday's hearing. Cantrell asked the court to set a hearing on bond in all three pending cases.

Deputy Lake County Prosecutor Infinity Baulos said she had filed petitions to revoke Costello's bond in the Hammond home invasion and burglary cases.

Cappas set Costello's bail review hearing for Friday.
