CROWN POINT — A man charged in a shootout that left a 14-year-old Gary boy dead last month faces additional charges linked to his recent arrest.

Anthony L. Triplett Jr., 20, of Gary, appeared with attorney Lemuel Stigler on Monday before Lake Criminal Court Judge Samuel Cappas, who entered not guilty pleas on Triplett’s behalf.

Triplett was charged with murder and arrested May 17 in Gary’s Miller section. He initially attempted to run from authorities and pulled a gun from his waistband before surrendering, according to court records.

Triplett was charged Friday with felony counts of carrying a handgun without a license and resisting law enforcement, and a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana.

Cappas set Triplett’s next hearing for July 16.

Police think 14-year-old Arion Lilly was an innocent bystander to the shootout between people in Triplett's car and a red Dodge Charger on April 25 as they sped through the city's Tolleston neighborhood.

Lilly was weeks away from graduating from eighth grade when he was shot dead as he walked to a barber shop near his home, officials said.

Two days after the homicide, Gary police released a photo of a red Chevrolet Impala with a dent in the rear bumper and asked for information about who might have been in it. An anonymous tip led them to the car, which was parked behind Triplett’s family home in the 300 block of Jay Street, court records say.

Police found 20 spent bullet casings to the east of Lilly's body in the 1100 block of Rutledge Street and another four casings to the west of his body, records say.

Gary police have anticipated additional charges in the case, Cmdr. Jack Hamady said.
