CROWN POINT — A man was shot six times last week while driving with his girlfriend and her 7-year-old daughter in Gary, court records allege.

The man told police Cachun C. Combs Jr. shot him because Combs was angry the man previously prevented Combs from fighting a third man, Lake Criminal Court records say. The man added he has known Combs since childhood.

Combs, 41, was charged Friday with felony attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery by means of a deadly weapon and battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

The victim's girlfriend told police she, her boyfriend and daughter were returning home from the beach about 7:20 p.m. Thursday when someone in another vehicle began shooting at them near the intersection of Polk Street and 19th Avenue.

The man was shot four times in the left thigh, once in the left hand and once in the right calf.

He drove himself to 15th Avenue and Grant Street, where his girlfriend took the wheel and continued driving him to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus.

Combs was not in custody as of Monday.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 911 or Gary police Detective Sgt. Michael Barnes at 219-881-1210. To remain anonymous, call 866-CRIME-GP.
