A man turned himself in to police Friday on charges alleging he battered the mother of his children and left their 4-month-old child in the trunk of an abandoned car Saturday, Gary police said.

Billie Roy White Jr., 26, of Gary, surrendered at the Lake County Jail, police Lt. Dawn Westerfield said.

White was charged Wednesday in Lake Criminal Court with two felony counts of neglect of a dependent and one count of felony domestic battery.

According to a probable cause affidavit, White battered the mother of his children Saturday at a residence in the 5000 block of Carolina, striking her three times with a closed fist as she held the child in her arms.

The mother’s four other children were present in the home at the time, court records show.

After battering the woman, White allegedly left the residence with the infant. White returned to the residence a short time later without the child and refused to tell the mother the baby's location, police said.

After White left, the mother called police. A police K-9 led officers to a an abandoned Cadillac with a broken out windshield in the driveway, and the baby was found inside, the affidavit said.
