CROWN POINT — A Merrillville man was arrested Saturday after he and a friend asked a neighbor why she didn't talk to them much and then fired gunshots outside her home after she closed the door on them, court records allege.

Nicholas M. Terry, 21, was arrested after the gunfire led to a response from the Northwest Indiana Regional SWAT team about 2 a.m. Saturday in the 7000 block of Fillmore Drive in Merrillville, according to police and court records.

Terry, who was shirtless, and a friend confronted a woman that morning as she walked someone outside about why "she was always rude" and doesn't talk to one of them much, Lake Criminal Court records say.

The woman replied she doesn't have time to talk and doesn't like small talk, records say.

Terry allegedly said, "Tell this (expletive), do you know who we are, we'll light her up, let her know," records state.

Terry's friend attempted to calm him down, but he went inside another home and retrieved a handgun, records say.

The woman told police Terry pointed the gun at her and told her he would shoot her. She called 911, and Terry went back inside, records say.

A short time later, the woman heard a voice that sounded like Terry say, "Light her crib up," followed by three gunshots, records allege.

Police executed a search warrant for the home Terry entered and found five magazines, one with three 9 mm rounds in it, and a 9 mm handgun, records say.

A shell casing found outside the woman's home was for a 9 mm gun.

Terry was charged Monday with felony intimidation, pointing a firearm, criminal recklessness and misdemeanor carrying a handgun without a license.
