MICHIGAN CITY — Police are investigating after they say a man stole a woman's car and used it to carry out armed robberies at nearby BP and Speedway gas stations.

A woman parked her vehicle Tuesday at the BP gas station, 1204 Franklin St., and kept the car running while she went inside to make a purchase, according to Michigan City Police Lt. Steve Westphal.

While inside, a man entered her car and, "within a very brief amount of time," drove to the Speedway gas station, 5830 Franklin St., and then to the BP gas station, 9998 W. 400 N., and carried out two separate armed robberies, Westphal said.

In both instances, the man entered the gas station, displayed a weapon while demanding money and then fled once the store clerk provided him the cash, police said.  He then fled the area.

Westphal said police are aggressively following additional leads. The stolen car has been recovered and processed for evidence.

Other items of evidence, including surveillance footage, have also been recovered and are being reviewed, he said.

Police did not have any suspect description information.

Anyone with information about these crimes is encouraged to contact Cpl. Tim Baker, the lead detective, at 219-874-3221, ext. 1075.
