GARY — Police subdued a naked man wearing an eye patch with a Taser on Friday night after he swung metal poles at them and growled, authorities said.

Police responded around 7 p.m. to the 1300 block of Jackson Street on a report of a disturbance and found a 40-year-old man in the middle of the street waving metal poles around, Cmdr. Jack Hamady said.

Officers ordered him to drop the poles, and the man began beating the front of his mother's car with them, police said.

As officers approached him and again ordered him to drop the poles, he allegedly growled and swung the poles at police.

Police used a Taser to gain control of the man, who was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation and medical treatment, Hamady said.
