CROWN POINT — Police clarified Wednesday that only one student was involved in a Feb. 19 threat to blow up a school.
A 15-year-old Crown Point High School student is accused of texting the threat and later attempting to cover up her actions by sending a subsequent text from a different number that falsely identified the person who made the threat as a Lake Central student, Crown Point Assistant Chief Jim Janda said.
The Crown Point student was charged with felony and misdemeanor intimidation in Lake Juvenile Court, police said. Her identity was not released because of her age.
Crown Point High School Principal Chip Pettit said federal privacy laws prevented him from commenting on any disciplinary actions taken against the girl.
No Lake Central students were involved in the threat, police said.
The second text message stated the threat was made for a “friend who is a freshman” at Crown Point High School and that she was “sorry” and “nothing is going to happen," according to a police news release.
The text messages were sent from two different phone numbers and were quickly traced by Lake County dispatch to Bandwith.com, authorities said.
Bandwith.com was contacted and advised the numbers were provided by a wholesale company called Pinger Inc., which makes mobile phone applications. The applications are used to provide a second phone number on a mobile device to keep a phone number private.
Pinger Inc. provided information to help detectives determine the origin of the threat, police said.
Crown Point police received several initial reports about the threat, Janda said. Some were in the jurisdiction of the Lake County Sheriff's Department, and others were in the Crown Point jurisdiction, he said.
The St. John Police Department, Crown Point Community School Corp., Lake Central School Corp. and an FBI counterterrorism unit, which includes some Lake County officers, assisted in the investigation, Janda said.
Times staff writer Rob Earnshaw contributed to this report.
