Police: 17-year-old was asked 'Are you ready to die tonight?' before being attacked and shot at in Gary

GARY — Police are investigating after a 17-year-old boy said he was attacked and shot at while riding his bike late Sunday night in the city's Horace Mann section.

Police were dispatched at 11:37 p.m. to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary for a report of a gunshot wound victim, according to Gary police Sgt. Latonia Shields-Marsh.

The victim was reportedly shot at as he rode his bike along Grant Street near the 500 block of Taft Street.

Shields-Marsh said one of the attackers reportedly told the victim, "Are you ready to die tonight? Because you're going to die," before the group of suspects punched him, prompting the boy to get off his bike and run away.

One of the suspects is described as black, light-skinned and wearing a gray shirt and jeans. The person pulled out a semi-automatic weapon, fired one shot, grazing the 17-year-old in the left side of his back.

Emergency room staff later informed him the bullet did not penetrate, but only grazed his back, Shields-Marsh said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gary police Detective Sgt. Williams Fazekas at 219-881-1210. To remain anonymous, call the crime tip line at 866-CRIME-GP.
