EAST CHICAGO — Police are investigating a shooting late Friday that left a Gary man dead and wounded a 25-year-old East Chicago man.

Ashanti Walden, 25, of Gary, was found at the scene of the shooting about 10:17 p.m. in the 4800 block of Alexander Street, East Chicago police Lt. Marguerite Wilder said.

Police responded to the area after the city's ShotSpotter technology alerted them to gunfire. Walden was found lying in a gated area with apparent gunshot wounds to his body, Wilder said. 

Walden was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:45 p.m., according to the Lake County coroner's office. His death was ruled a homicide.

The East Chicago man suffered a foot wound in the shooting and was treated at St. Catherine Hospital, Wilder said. 

Police have canvassed the area seeking information. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, Wilder said.
