I-65 vehicle shooting

Indiana State Police said someone fired this shot into a dealership-owned vehicle traveling on northbound Interstate 65 on Friday night.

MERRILLVILLE — Indiana State Police are investigating an apparent vehicle shooting on northbound Interstate 65 late Friday.

A 19-year-old employee of the Thomas Kia auto dealership in Highland told police he was traveling in a dealer-owned vehicle near the 251 mile marker, between Crown Point and U.S. 30, at about 6:20 p.m. when a silver car pulled beside him, and someone fired "shots" at the dealership vehicle.

A bullet struck the rear passenger side of the vehicle, Indiana State Police reported.

No injuries were reported, and police continued to investigate the matter Saturday morning.

The employee told police he was traveling in the northbound left lane when the other car pulled alongside the vehicle he was driving — a 2018 Kia Soul he was transporting to the Highland dealership from a dealer in Carmel, Indiana.

The Kia driver told police he looked over at the driver of the silver car, saw the car's window was down and made brief eye contact with the other driver while also noting two other occupants in the silver car.

The Thomas employee then heard "shots" being fired, Indiana State Police reported in a Saturday morning release.

A witness driving in the left lane behind the Thomas employee described a sliver Chevrolet Camaro with Illinois plates as the suspect vehicle.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call Indiana State Police Trooper Jerry George at 219-696-6242.
