Police: Man shot and killed while driving on Gary's West Side; detectives open up homicide investigation

GARY — Police are on the scene of a fatal shooting on the city's West Side. 

Police were dispatched about 9 p.m. Wednesday night near West Fifth Avenue and Hobart Street for a report of a crashed vehicle and a person inside who had been shot, Gary police said. 

Police have opened up a homicide investigation into the shooting. The male victim was reportedly struck by gunfire while driving in the area, police said. 

Other information, including the victim's age or hometown, was not immediately available.
