GARY — A person was arrested Friday in connection with Wednesday's fatal shooting at Ocampo Auto Sales in the city's Glen Park West section, police said.
Gary Police Investigations Cmdr. Jack Hamady said police are pursuing murder charges against a "person of interest" in the case. The male suspect is accused of shooting and killing Markis D. Square, 30, of Gary, on Wednesday.
Initial reports from police Wednesday indicated Square was allegedly there and intended to rob two people and a customer shot and killed Square to fend him off.
However, Hamady said Friday that Square was at the used car lot, 401 W. Ridge Road, on Wednesday to make a "business transaction," and a disagreement led to the shooting.
"We're still investigating that portion of it," Hamady said.
Officers and EMS were called out about 2 p.m. Wednesday to investigate. The coroner's office was dispatched to the business at 2:50 p.m.
Square was pronounced dead at 3:20 p.m. due to a gunshot wound in a homicide, according to the coroner's office.
One of Square's sisters, Angelik Square, told The Times on Friday the family disputes he intended to rob anyone Wednesday.
“Everyone is saying, 'This is not Markis.' My brother didn’t rob anybody," Angelik Square said. "He was a hard worker and took care of his family. He took care of his whole entire family."
She said Square leaves behind a newborn daughter and two sons.
Gary police and Lake County CSI are investigating.
