EAST CHICAGO — Police are seeking tips about the identity of a man and woman accused of robbing an elderly veteran and using his stolen credit cards to fraudulently make purchases at a Hammond store.

The veteran arrived home Feb. 7 in the 4600 block of Baring Avenue in East Chicago and did not notice a man entered the building behind him, Detective Luis A. Semidei said.

The suspect asked the man about someone who lived in the building, but then stepped closer and said, "I need your money, man," police said.

The suspect grabbed the man, and the two struggled. The suspect was able to get a hold of the man's wallet and fled, police said.

Police obtained photos from a Walmart where the suspect used the man's credit cards, Semidei said. Police are seeking tips about the identity of a man and woman in the photos.

The veteran's daughter released the photos to The Times. In addition to credit cards, her father's wallet contained his military pilot's ID, which was important to him, she said.

The Times is not naming the veteran because he is a victim of a violent crime.

Anyone with information is asked to call Semidei at 219-391-8426. To remain anonymous, call 219-391-8500.
