Police: Suspect released pending charges in White Castle meth lab case

Meth lab bust at White Castle

The White Castle at the corner of 37th Avenue and Hobart Road in Hobart was closed off with tape Friday after police investigated a suspected "one pot" methamphetamine lab inside the restaurant.

HOBART — Police have released a suspect who was taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation into a suspected one-pot methamphetamine lab discovered Friday inside the White Castle fast-food restaurant at 7996 E. Ridge Road.

Hobart police Lt. James Gonzales said Sunday he spoke with the department's drug detective and learned the suspect was released pending charges.

It was not immediately clear this weekend when the Lake County prosecutor's office would file charges in the case.

Indiana State Police responded to the restaurant to safeguard and test the chemicals, Gonzales has said.

Several people may have been involved, including one person who was sitting at a booth inside the restaurant, he said.

Gonzales on Saturday said he has assigned the case to a Hobart officer working with the Drug Enforcement Administration/Lake County HIDTA team.

Jamie Richardson, vice president at White Castle, issued a statement Friday night.

“We are proud of our White Castle team members who quickly alerted local authorities about a suspicious customer, and thankful for the Hobart Police department’s rapid response. We are grateful to be part of a community where everyone looks out for one another, and works together to keep our neighborhoods safe," the statement read.
