A vehicle that fled the scene of a car crash Monday on Interstate 65 had been reported stolen from Joliet, Illinois, Indiana State Police said in a news release.

James Faint, 18, of Joliet, Illinois, and Octavia Watts, 18, of Crest Hill, Illinois, are each charged with vehicle theft and resisting law enforcement, police said.

At about 4:15 p.m. Monday, a silver Nissan was involved in a hit-and-run on southbound I-65 at mile marker 244, about 3 miles south of the Crown Point exit.

The other driver was able to get a description and the plate off of the fleeing car.

After running the plates, Trooper Corey Adam found the silver Nissan Murano was reported stolen from Joliet on Sunday, the release said.

Adam spotted the stolen car and made a traffic stop at the 217 mile marker. Faint, who was driving, initially stopped the car, but then fled from the scene with Adam in pursuit, police said.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Department deployed stop sticks at mile marker 205. Faint swerved to avoid the stop sticks, then crashed into the median cable barrier, the release said.

Both Faint and Watts, his passenger, were transported to the Jasper County Jail in Rensselaer.

Assisting in the case were the Jasper County Sheriff's Department, Rensselaer police, Remington EMS and Village Motors.
