HAMMOND — A 42-year-old man has been charged in Lake Criminal Court with robbery and attempted kidnapping after he allegedly threatened to kill a woman Monday outside the Aldi grocery store while trying to rob her.
An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for Gary Lewis Allgood, of East Chicago, on charges of attempted kidnapping, robbery, intimidation and theft, police said. All those charges, with the exception of theft, are felonies.
Officers responded about 5:40 p.m. to the parking lot of Aldi's grocery store, 7925 Indianapolis Blvd., to take a report from a 56-year-old female victim, court records show.
A woman told police she noticed a suspicious person — later identified as Allgood — pacing back and forth on his cellphone when she arrived that afternoon to shop at the Aldi on Monday, court records show.
Later, she entered her car on the driver's side, when she saw the same suspicious person open her passenger side door, with his hand in his pocket as if he had a weapon, and say, "Don't make any scene or I'll blow your brains out right here," the woman told police.
The woman told police she feared for her life and offered he take her purse, but he refused and told her to shut the door and drive her car away from the area with him in it, court records show.
The victim ran from the car and began yelling for help, she said. She told police she was still afraid of what Allgood might do, so she opened her wallet and gave him some money, court records show. He then left the scene on foot, records show.
An off-duty officer in the area heard dispatch give a suspect description and relay Allgood had allegedly fled on foot toward the nearby Walmart. The officer in his marked police vehicle drove to the Walmart where he met with Allgood and patted him down.
Allgood allegedly said he was a convicted felon, had no weapons on him, and he had previously been at the nearby Aldi store.
It's unclear from the probable cause affidavit if Allgood was arrested on scene. However, he was positively identified by witnesses as the man who tried to rob and kidnap the initial victim.
