Region police officer dies while on vacation, department says

LONG BEACH — A 25-year area police veteran died unexpectedly Monday while on vacation with his family, the Long Beach Police Department is reporting.

Deputy Tobin "Toby" Babcock, who had been with Long Beach police for 17 years, died in his sleep in Orlando, Florida, the department said.

He began his law enforcement career 25 years ago at the LaPorte County Sheriff's Department.

"Deputy Babcock was hired at the Long Beach Police Department on July 28th 2005 and served the Long Beach community with the utmost pride, professionalism, and dedication for the past 17 years," the department said.

"As we mourn the loss of Deputy Babcock please take a moment to keep the family of Deputy Babcock in your thoughts and prayers."

Root Funeral Home in Michigan City is reportedly handling the funeral arrangements.
