PORTAGE — A St. John man is facing charges after he allegedly crashed into a gas pump, causing a fire, and fleeing the scene.
Bryan G. Kleine, 36, was charged with misdemeanor counts of leaving the scene of an accident and possession of marijuana.
According to police, Kleine stopped at Citco gas station, 6001 U.S. 20, just before 4 p.m. Friday. Video tape shows him going into the station, purchasing something and leaving. When he left, he allegedly struck a gas pump, knocking it over and causing it to ignite into flames. Kleine then allegedly fled. The Portage Fire Department was called to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries.
Police found Kleine nearly two hours later, sitting in his truck, in the 5900 block of Carlson Avenue. The rear bumper was dented with fresh damage, according to police.
Kleine allgedly told police he "freaked out" after hitting the pump and fled.

Upon searching the truck, a police K9 alerted and police found marijuana inside an eyeglass case and cigarette packet.
Kleine was transported to Porter County Jail.
