State dismisses sexual misconduct charges against former East Chicago junior high teacher

CROWN POINT — The state has dismissed child molestation and sexual misconduct charges against a former East Chicago junior high teacher.

Paul E. Chandler Jr., 40, was charged Oct. 17, 2016, with child molesting, a level 4 felony, and sexual misconduct with a minor, a level 5 felony, on allegations he inappropriately touched two students in 2016 while working as a math and P.E. teacher at Block Junior High School in East Chicago, court records state.

A 13-year-old girl told detectives Chandler touched her arm and brushed his fingers over her thighs in September 2016 while she sat doing her school work at her desk. A 14-year-old girl said Chandler pressed his knee against her buttocks, rubbed her arm and pulled her hair, telling her “You know I'm fine,” records state.

The Lake County Prosecutor's Office filed motions May 21 dismissing the charges. The office stated its reason for dismissal was because it was unable to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Defense attorney Steven L. Mullins did not respond Friday to a request for comment.
