Indiana State Police recovered two handguns during a traffic stop early Tuesday on the Borman Expressway, about an hour after the guns were reported stolen to Gary police.

GARY — An Indiana State Police trooper stopped a driver for speeding early Tuesday on the Borman Expressway and found two guns in the car that had been reported stolen an hour earlier in Gary, police said.

The trooper stopped Tywoun D. Nixon, 22, of Gary, about 2:15 a.m. on westbound Interstate 80/94, about one mile west of Grant Street, for driving 93 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Police searched the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu he was driving and found two Glock 9 mm handguns under the front passenger seat. One of the guns was loaded, and two magazines fully loaded with 32 rounds also were found, police said.

The guns were reported stolen to Gary police at 1:18 a.m. Tuesday.

Nixon was arrested on suspicion of two felony counts of stolen firearms, misdemeanor violation of a protection order, handgun no permit and driver never licensed, police said.

A passenger in the car was released at the scene.
