A 22-year-old man was found shot to death Sunday afternoon in Gary.

At about 12:49 p.m., the Lake County coroner's office was dispatched to 37th and Madison streets, according to a news release.

Deontre Borders, of the 3700 block of Madison Street, was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries from gunshot wounds. The matter of death was declared to be a homicide.

Gary police Detective Cpl. James Bond and the Metro Homicide Unit are investigating the incident.

Sunday's killing was Gary's 30th homicide of 2018. The Times reported Sunday that Gary's 29 homicides as of Wednesday marked an increase of 16 percent from the 25 logged at the same time last year. In all of 2017, the city saw 48 homicides.

Gary cases account for about two-thirds of all homicides in Lake County, which has seen a total of 45 homicides so far in 2018.

All but two of this year's homicide victims in Gary died from gunshot wounds.

The city also leads the county in shootings, though numbers are down from this time last year.

Gary had logged 66 shootings as of Wednesday, compared with 93 at the same time in 2017.
