EAST CHICAGO — Police found a Gary man with an apparent gunshot wound to the back lying on the ground behind two vehicles Monday in the city's Harbor section, an official said.

Ahlon Buggs, 23, was shot in the 3900 block of Pulaski Street and died at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

East Chicago police arrived in the 3900 block of Pulaski Street just after 6:55 p.m. and were flagged down by a man, who directed officers to Buggs, Lt. Marguerite Wilder said.

Buggs, who was visiting friends in the area, was taken by ambulance to St. Catherine.

He was pronounced dead at 8:23 p.m., a coroner's release said. The cause and manner of death were gunshot wounds in a homicide.

While officers were at St. Catherine, a call from an unknown source was received at the Lake County 911 center about an active shooter at the hospital, Wilder said. The claims were unsubstantiated, she said.
