Crime watch meeting planned.

HAMMOND — Police are investigating after one person was killed in a shooting Friday night just north of Morton High School. 

The Lake County coroner's office confirmed it pronounced 20-year-old Shermane Sargent, of Calumet City, dead from a gunshot wound to the chest at 9:30 p.m. Friday at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary.

The initial shooting call came in at about 8:30 p.m., Hammond Police Lt. Steven Kellogg said, with officers responding to the scene on the 6700 block of New Jersey Street. 

Upon arrival, officers located a black male laying just outside of a vehicle. The vehicle was determined to be stolen from Calumet City.

The coroner's office listed the manner of death a homicide.

Other agencies assisting in the investigation were Hammond police and Hammond Fire/EMS.
