GRIFFITH — Authorities are investigating the shooting death of a 20-year-old Griffith man.

The victim was identified as Marco Alonzo, who was pronounced dead at 11:27 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Lake County coroner's report.

Cmdr. Keith Martin said Griffith police were dispatched just before 11 p.m. to the 900 block of East River Road and found Alonzo lying in the parking lot of Park West Apartments.

Martin said Alonzo had been shot in the face and was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary, where he later died.

Witnesses told police Alonzo went to the parking lot after receiving a call on his cellphone. Soon, a gunshot was heard, and he was found lying on the ground.

Martin said a light colored, mid-size vehicle was reported leaving the area immediately after the incident.

Alonzo — who recently moved to the apartment complex — possessed a bag of what appeared to be marijuana at the time of his death, Martin said. But no connection has been established between the drugs and the shooting.

"Multiple witnesses have been interviewed and the scene was processed," Martin said in a department release Wednesday. "However, numerous leads have been developed and the investigation is still ongoing."

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Jim Sibley at 219-924-7503, ext. 239, or Griffith police's Anonymous Tip Line at 219-922-3085.
