GARY — A shooting early Monday claimed the life of a city police officer's son and another man and wounded two other people, officials said.
Kerry Rice Jr., 32, of Gary, and a man currently listed as "John Doe" were found dead about 2 a.m. in a vehicle that struck a tree in the 1600 block of Connecticut Street, police said.
Gary police Sgt. Kerry Rice Sr. confirmed the younger Rice was his son, but declined further comment.
Police found the men after initially responding about 1:55 a.m. to a report of a gunshot victim a couple of blocks away, records show.
After locating a man with a gunshot wound, officers found Kerry Rice Jr. and the second homicide victim in the vehicle, and a woman with a gunshot wound close to a nearby nightclub, police said.
A witness told police the four victims were traveling through an intersection when someone shot at their car, and the driver ran off the road into weeds and hit a tree, Cmdr. Jack Hamady said.
The man and woman wounded in the shooting were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
