UPDATE: Source says two men made off with at least $500K in Hammond Brink's truck heist that's 'the biggest robbery that the city has ever seen.'

In what a source is calling, "the biggest robbery that the city has ever seen," two armed men reportedly made off with at least $500,000 in a Brink's truck heist Saturday morning in Hammond.

Hammond police, K-9 officers and FBI officials are investigating after two men wearing ski masks fired multiple shots at the truck, robbed it and fled the scene at the parking lot of a Chase Bank in the 4200 block of Calumet Avenue in Hammond, according to sources.

“This was well planned and executed by somebody who knew what they were doing," a source with knowledge of the investigation told The Times.

The source told The Times that cameras on the scene may have captured images of the suspects, who took at least $500,000 from the Brink's truck and the security officer's firearm.

The two men, approximately 20 to 30 years old, drove onto the parking lot and fired at the truck before making off with three bags containing money, according to a release from Hammond police. The suspects reportedly returned to their vehicle and fled the area.

There were no injuries, according to Hammond police.

Hammond Police Lt. Steve Kellogg said detectives were interviewing potential witnesses Saturday afternoon.

An abandoned burned out car was later discovered along 136th Street, also known as Boy Scout Road, in Hammond, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation. That same source said the route connects Hammond with the south side of Chicago and that the two suspects may have made their getaway to Chicago.

The source said somewhere in that area authorities believe municipal cameras may have captured images of the suspects and car. Police did not disclose what kind of car was used in the robbery.

Officers spoke to the driver/security guard of the Brink's truck after arriving at the scene.

FBI agents have arrived and are working with Hammond detectives, police said. The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information can call Detective Sergeant Daniel Bates at 219-852-2979.
