GARY — A homicide investigation is underway after NIPSCO workers found a young female's body in an alleyway Monday morning, police said.

Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez confirmed that about 8:20 a.m., utility company employees performing work in the area discovered an unknown black female dead in an alleyway west of Pennsylvania Street near 20th Place in Gary.

Police were not yet disclosing the manner of death or particulars of the condition of the body when it was discovered, pending further investigation.

Martinez did say it appears to be a "young" female.

Members of the Lake County Metro/Gary Homicide Unit could be seen walking up and down Pennsylvania Street, canvassing the area and interviewing homeowners from their front steps late Monday morning.

One homeowner, who did not want to be named, suggested to detectives they check with the several churches in the area for possible surveillance video.

Several backyards and debris-littered lots along the alleyway were cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape, but the main alleyway west of Pennsylvania remained accessible to the public.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
