Leila Edwards was found shot to death Saturday at her home in the Miller neighborhood of Gary.

GARY — A woman was found dead of gunshot wounds Saturday morning, county officials said.

The Lake County coroner's office said at 9:15 a.m. it was dispatched to the 7200 block of East First Avenue, where Leila Edwards, 43, was found with gunshot wounds.

Edwards was pronounced dead at 10:22 a.m. The office has ruled the manner of death a homicide.

A neighbor of Edwards, Jamaal Means, said she was "very nice and outgoing."

"I would never suspect anything like this would happen," he said. "It is a shock."

The shooting remains under investigation.
